Crispy South Indian Snack
Banana flower, also known as Vazhaipoo in Tamil, is a nutrient-rich blossom packed with flavor. Turn it into a delicious snack with this easy pakora (bajji) recipe. Light, crispy, and perfect with a hot cup of chai!
INGREDIENTS:
-
1 cup banana flower petals (Vazhaipoo), finely chopped
-
½ cup gram flour (besan)
-
1 tbsp rice flour (adds extra crispiness)
-
½ tsp turmeric powder
-
½ tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)
-
½ tsp cumin seeds
-
Salt to taste
-
Water (as needed)
-
Oil (for deep frying)
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
Step 1: Clean & Prep the Banana Flower
-
Wash the banana flower petals thoroughly to remove any bitterness or dirt.
-
Finely chop the petals and set aside.
Step 2: Make the Batter
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine gram flour, rice flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin seeds, and salt.
-
Gradually add water and mix well to form a thick batter. The consistency should coat the petals but not be runny.
Step 3: Add the Banana Flower
-
Add the chopped banana flower to the batter and mix until well combined.
Step 4: Fry the Pakoras
-
Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
-
Once the oil is hot, drop small spoonfuls of the batter mixture into the oil.
-
Fry in batches, turning occasionally, until the pakoras are golden brown and crispy.
Step 5: Serve Hot
-
Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
-
Serve warm with coconut chutney or tomato ketchup.
💡 Tips:
-
Soak chopped banana flower in buttermilk or turmeric water for 10 minutes to reduce bitterness.
-
For a kid-friendly version, reduce or skip the chili powder.
